And 100% of the time you have 2 safeties on the field. Safeties have to prevent the big play while nickel backs are generally preventing short gains.
I've always liked Callahan but he's been injured a lot and Amos has shown to be extremely reliable over his career. I also wonder how much of Jackson's freelancing is due to knowing Amos is going to be where he needs to be. If Jackson can't trust the guy next to him maybe he won't be as much of a ball hawk.
This is not to say it's obvious who should be the priority to sign but I don't think it's quite so black and white.
I'm not saying you sign one over the other. Just that you need 3 starting quality CBs along with 2 starting safeties. And if we do not sign Callahan, we have a huge hole. Just like if we don't resign Amos. It is not an either/or situation in my mind. IMO we need both (or an equivalent quality replacement).
I wouldn't say it's a huge hole. The front 7 is strong and the LB's have the ability to cover or at least assist in coverage in most ways that would make it tough on teams.
I'm not saying ignore the position, i do see your side, but surely there are options that will allow them to get similar talent within the price tag they want or can afford. So they can get both, but i'd have to side with paytonisgod in the fact the the safety sees more snaps, thus making it slightly more important priority to keep under contract.
And i mainly think this way cus i've never heard of the top Nickle Back in the draft going in the top 10, let alone the 1st Rd. I just feel that a Nickle is easier to replace.

If you don't have roster strength up and down your defense including the nickel back and both safeties it will look like a huge hole if you want to go deep in the playoffs.

I'm expecting no big free agents this year. They will let Callahan and Amos go if they get decent offers elsewhere and they will pocket the compensatory picks.

I agree...just saying finding Nickle talent in FA or the draft(with limited picks) is going to more than likely be easier than finding a starting Safety.

We have a decent Nickel in Sherrick Mcmanis. Kevin Toliver can probably play Nickel too.
