I've long believed Vic won't get a head coaching job. He's 60 and as I've said this isn't the first time he's had one of the best defenses in the league. He must not interview well...or maybe he doesn't have great connections with offensive coaches...something, because he hasn't landed a head coaching job yet, so I'm not sure why now would be different. Also, teams like Arizona, NYJ, Tampa, Browns all have relatively young QB's they want to build around. That screams offensive coach to me. I could be wrong...but I'm willing to take my chances.
If you look at the recent coach hirings in the NFL, they have all been dominated by offensive people. Look at a lot of the defensive head coaches in the NFL. Several have been let go (Bowles, Wilks, etc) and others are in trouble because they have lost their OCs to HC positions and have not been able to replace them (Vikings and Falcons for example).
Vic would need to have a really strong OC to work with. Who would that be? If you get one and the program is successful, how log before you lose that OC to a HC position and you have to find a new OC?
I have a ton of respect for Vic Fangio and as much as it would hurt the Bears if he left, I would wish him success as a HC. He strikes me as a complete straight shooter and a really decent man. But like you I just don't think it is going to happen.

This is my thing. I mean when Harbaugh left in SF Vic was the natural replacement for him and got passed up for his own DL coach. How does that happen?
It's certainly possible some team will give him a chance a la Bruce Arians, but that's kind of a warning in of itself. Arians despite some success ended up retiring after only a few years likely due to his age. So teams will also have to weigh the possibility that Vic might only have a few years in him even if he's successful.

Yeah...I mean like I said...I could be totally wrong and some team takes a shot on him...but you have to wonder why it hasn't happened already. I do hope we keep him, but there are some good replacements available should he leave and this is an attractive situation right now, so I won't be crushed if we lose him.
Do you remember our team first 3-4 games this season? We were talking around here about how our D is worse than last year, even giving up vs Packers!? maybe even Miami...
I hope Vic stays and I think he’s missed his chance for a HC position by 2/3 years. That being said I would wish him the best of luck if he found a team willing. He has shown that he can build a defence and he deserves the chance to build a team if someone is willing to take that chance.
" Elway said he he wants “them great on one side of the ball” and said he was looking for experience, someone who understands the game, and the ability to lead men.
“I want them to be great on one side of the ball and great at what they do—whatever that position that may be—whether it be a coordinator or whatever they’ve done. I look for greatness on that side. For me, I look for experience. I want the guys that understand the game, they understand Xs and Os but also have the ability to lead men. That’s a big part of it in today’s world. Those are two things that I look for, and there are guys we have feel for. I think there are a lot of things that go into a head coach that it’s a feel thing. We’re going to try to find that guy with that ‘it’ factor, that can make those right decisions and also lead men. We’re confident that we can find that guy.”

I don't know about worse...but Vic has deserved some criticism for some things this season for sure.

All these qualities fit Fangio."
Yeah...I just can't see those two seeing eye to eye on a lot of things. I'm not sure Elway would appreciate Vic's "straight shooter" personality.
I think Vic will be offered a HC job. He may or may not take it. Every person is unique and every situation is unique. I'm hoping he stays here in Chicago, but you never know. It's his life. If he feels like he wants to have a head coaching experience in his life before he retires, I can understand that. I just retired a few days ago. I certainly can understand a guy wanting to give something a try before retiring. What's the worst that can happen for Vic? He can give it a go, and if it doesn't work out, well, he at least gave it a try. You only get one life here. Might as well live it to the fullest while you can.

Congrats!!! Thats awesome!
I think if he's offered an HC position he'll take it too. Obviously he wants to be an HC or he wouldn't even bother interviewing...so clearly it's a goal of his.
