The Bears should up his title to Asst. head coach and give him enough $ to encourage him to stay.
I think the Assistant HC position was killed a few years ago and from the league's perspective you are an assistant, a coordinator or a HC.
From what I was able to piece together when the Bears hired Nagy, Fangio is the highest paid coordinator in the NFL and is paid as much as some of the lower compensated HC's.
Why would a top DC in a franchise and a city that yearns for defense leave. He knows how hard it is be part of a winning team. He knows this could be the beginning of a Dynasty that happens so rarely. I am also sure he knows the history of Chicago and what could have been in the mid 80's.
He could reach sainthood in Chi-town like Ditka and do anything he wants. Shit if this team goes in the shitter he would still be able to find a sap owner to leach onto for his last few years.
This is his Defense and it is a top defense. No one in their right mind leave it at his age only to restart again. He had it good in San Fran and also saw how fast it can decline. He will stay.

That's good to know. The Bears really need him to stay. A SB ring could go a long way to make it happen.
As a Vikings fan, I do not - repeat, DO NOT - hate this.
But yeah, this is the problem ... with success comes more change! Sucks...
Vikings fans would love to have Shurmur back. Look at the hot mess that is our offense!
Good luck, Fangio ... I mean, good luck, Bears fans! Good luck holding onto your guy...
Actually I think the odds are in our favor.
The market for HCs is dominated by the need for the younger, innovative offensive minds. And that is decidedly not Vic Fangio. He is not PC, a total straight shooter and (purely personal speculation) not very politically savvy. I suspect he does not interview well.
Besides, he has possibly the best defensive roster assembled in the last 15+ years or so. A DC's wet dream. And an offensive genius for a HC. If he stays, we could easily have multiple trips deep into the playoffs over the next 4 - 6 years.
The problem I see got Fangio as a head coach is that he coaches from the box and not on the field. If he was to get a head coach position, they would likely want him to run the defense. He can be the head coach and run the defense from the box. He might tell people he could, but in the back of their minds, they would question this.
Edit: have the same success running the defense from the field. Not be a head coach in the box.
