Reality of Chicago Bears Markus Wheaton situation by Parker Hurley1 day agoFollow @parkerhurley
Offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said the Chicago Bears are “trying to find a role” for Markus Wheaton. The reality is the team has already moved on
Among the hundreds of questionable decisions made by this regime, one of the newer ones is the question as to why Josh Bellamy, a special teamer is starting over Markus Wheaton, the supposed big-name offseason acquisition. It is not a good look. When asked, offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains said the team was trying to find a role for him.
The reality of the situation is that the Bears have admitted their mistake, they’ve moved on from Wheaton, and they will go to the well again next season.
The injuries hurt but do not tell the whole story. There is no need to play him. In terms of being a route runner and creating separation, Dontrelle Inman is better. In terms of blocking, Josh Bellamy is better. Markus Wheaton has proven he has no interest in that aspect of the game. And in the slot, Wheaton is better down the field, but Kendall Wright is better in the quick passing game near the line of scrimmage. Mitchell Trubisky has more history with Wright than Wheaton and given that he is a rookie quarterback with a questionable offensive line, this is a no-brainer as well.
Markus Wheaton is the fourth wide receiver, injuries aside. He is signed on for next season but his dead cap would only be $750,000 thousand and the savings would be $5 million. Another no-brainer. We bid you adieu, Markus Wheaton. We hardly knew you.
The Mike Glennon signing will no doubt have people shaking their heads and clucking their tongues for another decade but it's far from Ryan Pace's biggest error and flawed thinking. If the Bears were in the mode of replacing both HC and GM again their reasoning (funny word for an organization that has little) might be based on Pace's destruction of a once viable offense.
How do you explain get of rid of 2 top NFL WRs it took us many years of futility to finally acquire and replace them with the collection of #3, #4, and PS hangers on we have now? We got a bag of peanuts 5th and a thank you for BMarsh and a 7th and zip for AJ. Three years ago they were ranked as one of the top receiving duos in the NFL and now we have Dontrelle Inam and Josh Bellamy?
Pace has sent 6'3" and 6'4" 220-230lb dominators on their way and ended up replacing them with the likes of Mini-Cooper WRs like Eddie Royal, Markus Wheaton and Kendall Wright and his prize replacement isn't likely to ever see a complete 16 games season. How does a supposedly smart guy like Pace let this happen especially when he burned 4 draft picks to get his hoped for franchise QB?
Out of all of Pace's attempts to build a WR core Wheaton his been his biggest mistake yet.
Again...I'll ask how an OC can't find a role for a guy who, in his two full seasons in Pitt, had over 700 yards receiving one year, and over 600 yards receiving another year? Pitt seemed to be able to find a role for him. And by the way...that was with a receiving corp that had Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant, Darius Heyward Bey, Heath Miller and Le'Veon Bell all seeing major action in the pass game too. You can't find a role for that guy??!! Are you shitting me? There is a failure here for sure....I'm just not so sure it's with Pace on this one.
There is definitely some sort of dysfunctiongoing on her in terms of properly using the players. Not sure how much of a role the players are playing in it, but the coaches are front and center.
The question is, does Wheaton want a roll? Has he decided on collecting his pay check and moving on.
I actually think you nailed it Mike. This guy seems to have been dogging it ever since he returned. He's just one of the guys I've redlined as having quit.

My take is he's never been a fit to begin with. He's a deep threat on a team whose HC won't throw deep. Maybe that part isn't on Pace but IMHO the guy mailed it in long ago. A single catch for 9 yards in 12 targets. Why is he even on the roster?

The problem with grading the offense thus year is that Fox has been repeatedly putting players in positions they are bad at.
We have an offensive line which is great and zone blocking and a running back that is great at running behind a zone scheme. So he calls the most predictable power running game ever.
The majority if time Trubisky gets ti throw the ball it is on an obvious passing situation with normally 8+ yards needed for a first down.
I see Wheaton as the same. He has looked terrible sure. But he has not exactly been put in a position to do what he is good at. I'm not saying we should keep him. But we for sure haven't seen what is capable of either.

Why I agree Pace has been horrible building the WR core, however, Brandon Marshall (he is currently with the Giants and he was causing trouble with the Jets) was a basket case, and Alshon Jeffery had no intention staying in Chicago.

It is what it is to be honest. We did get worse in our rec department, but all of these 'leaves' had their reason... I dont have a problem with Pace letting those (and Bennett and Forte) guys go, real problem with Pace is that he DID NOT SIGN APPROPRIATE REPLACEMENTS. And thats solely on him. Dont be fooled, we also spent a bunch of money on these guys but we got very close to nothing (would add S's Demps and Rolle to that list). Glennon, in my eyes, is not a total failure as he was a prime (and a tad too expensive) decoy.
