IMO Belichick's approach is still coaching as well. The HC is setting expectations for the team. But I think the difference between BillyB and the rest is he actually follows through on it and makes sure the players are utilizing the resources needed to become fundamentally better players. Or they just disappear.
Carroll out in Seattle does a decent job of teaching fundamentals as well. They were the team that started the whole rugby tackling stuff in the NFL.
He's also employed some very good assistants who know how to teach his system but none of them are football geniuses either because their records as HCs once leaving NE is dismal. They win because they know how to acquire the talent to do it with and teach them their system. There was a time when the Bears were a team like that too but it's so long ago only our grandfathers or great grandfathers saw it take place and we haven't been that same team since. Not even in the '80s.
It seems to me that Ryan Pace is at least trying to move into that kind of an approach but I also have my concerns about a couple pf things. 1) Is his background with the Saints ever gonna allow him to really succeed. Even with Drew Brees at QB they've still been an epitome of inconsistency from year to year. 2) Ryan Pace isn't working for an owner like Robert Kraft. On their best days the McCaskey's aren't even close to being in Robert Kraft's league and Ted Phillips wouldn't even qualify as his bookkeeper.
Pace is between a rock and hard place working for this team and it's management and only time will tell if he's good enough and right enough often enough to get the control he actually needs to get the team to the top and keep them there as teams like NE and Green Bay have done. Time will tell and his next big challenge now that he feels he has his QB will be to find the right guy to manage the team at the HC level and I'm still not sure how that will all come out in the wash but he needs to do it after this season.
