Setting aside Bellamy's work on STeams which is stellar and good enough to make a Pro Bowl team as a coverage guy let's talk about his abilities as a WR as this article focuses on.One thing I've noticed about Bellamy that is almost universally true is that he gets open very often. Contrast that to Kevin White who despite his size and reputed speed never created much separation or ran his routes with the precision required. It may not be saying all that much but in truth Bellamy is a far more dependable target than Kevin White ever has been yet White was listed as a #1 WR and Bellamy as a backup slot guy.
So Bellamy does have good short area quickness and enough speed and cutting ability to create separation and we've seen that. But what we've also seen is an unfortunate tendency to drop clutch throws at the worst of all possible times. I've been paying attention to that flaw during the preseason because getting over it in all likelihood would mean he either made the final cut or he didn't and he has caught the ball more dependably so far. If that continues we're just gonna have to forgive him for his past transgressions.
Those games are already lost. They're history. This is a what have you done lately league and lately he'd done much better. No one can fault him for not making that TD catch against Atlanta. Yes, he was held and it was either missed intentionally or seen and not called and it should have been which was yet another chance to have the ball on the one and blast it in from there. But there's also another factor in play there some may have missed and it's on Mike Glennon.
Like many of Glennon's passes the throw was late coming and it led Bellamy by too much. The guy really doesn't have a whole lot of touch and pinpoint accuracy and that pass was no exception nor were the other two to Howard and Miller. Let's face it. Glennon is a tall drink of water with a very slow release. It's almost as if he needs a wind up to throw and I believe that's why he's been replaced twice as a starter already in his career and about to be replaced a third time by a QB with a much quicker release who does have pinpoint accuracy.
The only blame I can lay on Bellamy for not making that catch is that he isn't 6'3" or 6'4" so he could have reached it even though it was a bit off the money. A dozen or more other QBs might have made that pass work including Trubisky or Cutler but Mike Glennon isn't either of them and he's who was playing QB. It was a heart breaking miss but I'm not gonna fault Bellamy because even after being interfered with he laid out for it for all he was worth and it was still just out of reach.
He's not ever gonna be even a #2 WR but this year he's still one of the better WRs we can put out there. Let's just hope his days of having the dropsies when the game is on the line are over with.
I don't know much about Deonte Thompson at this point (and I think that's important to note) but I'm open to him improving too.
Two things I believe:
- Misfortune breeds opportunity.
- You get better when you practice the skills on which you need to improve.
We'll know pretty soon if either of these guys can step into larger roles (3rd and 4th receiver roles). I think both will as they build chemistry and confidence through practice and reps. We will see though.
That was a major turnaround so it's possible we're seeing something similar from Bellamy because the next time he drops a game winning TD pass he may get a call to come to the coaches offices with his playbook and be handed a ticket for the Greyhound. Right now we need him to get open and hold onto the ball and that's all I care about. That past is just that.
