I don't think any fan base in the NFL who hasn't practically given up all hope of their team ever improving much will tolerate a rebuild that's taken as long as this one has with unlimited grace and patience. It may only be year three under Fox/Pace but counting Emery/Trestman it's now year five with our record over the previous four standing at 22 wins vs 42 losses. But this thread is about Kizer so back on topic.
Maybe we should be asking whether or not Kizer is another QB much like Cutler who has a lot of great tools to work with but who will also need much help and good coaching before he's able to become a successful starter and right now we don't have that to offer.
He seems to be the type of player who if you had a later first or second round pick you could afford to risk then he might be a guy you'd draft but with a top five pick? No. I don't believe we have a team or a coaching staff in place who could benefit a young QB right now so why spend a high pick on one?
No matter how great the need this is not a time to be risking top picks on questionable talent like Kizer who may not be ready to start for another two years and then only if he does get the proper coaching and support. At pick #3 he would be a $30 mil investment who couldn't even be used right now so I would spend that money on someone who can.
Personally I still feel the first two rounds for certain need to be used to draft starting caliber players. Either a DE or DL/OLB type or a Safety in one and then reversed in round two. Then I'd look at round three and four for QBs, WRs, and OTs. Unless there is so much undeniable upside in one of the top ranked QBs AND Pace is ready to move on from Fox and hire a HC and OC who can build a proper offense and develop a young QB to run it I would not prioritize a QB over other positions until it got the point where that kid stuck out like a sore thumb on my draft board.
But that's me. QB is a key position but it's teams who win games not QBs. The QBs job is best done when he's putting points on the board and not making mistakes that can give the game away. If, for the time being, Glennon can do that then he will have succeeded at least enough to keep his job for another year. So I'm looking more at 2019 or even 2020 before a talented young QB has been developed to start in his place.
