With all due respect to you all I don't think Pace can worry too much about what this forum thinks about his pick or Bears fans in general. Whatever Watson may become if he does manage to land with the right team is not necessarily what he will be or become of he ends upon this team. IHMO I do not believe this team is ready for a top QB pick right now. The table hasn't been adequately set.Pace isn't as venturesome in FA as I would like to see him so why would he be in the draft unless he's some how goaded or manipulated into a pick? A QB there is not the safer pick when compared to his other potential options. I see no difference in his professed policy of passing on the risk of a UFA who may be too rich for his blood and may not fit or disappoint than on a draftee for the very same reason. He'll have to make a $30 mil guaranteed investment in that guy too. He has no choice.
I understand a lot of that will depend on team fit and blah blah blah, but ultimately angry fans aren't going to get into the nuances of whether it was a fit or not.
I also understand this is all projection. I'm not a scout. I don't know anything really about evaluation a players fit for a team. I do know I like what I see in Watson and while projecting those attributes on the Bears is optimistic, it's how I feel.
I do believe that's the very problem I've been pointing at all along this year. Nothing has changed.
If you want my personal view on only the player IHMO Watson has some talent but he also has many of the same issue with his mechanics and decision making that fans and the media alike blamed Cutler for. Both threw many TD and both threw many picks. Both tend to suffer when having to play under heavy pressure. Maybe that can be dealt with by virtue of good coaching and development but whose gonna do that? Fox? Loggains?
Dak Prescott succeeded because he was fortunate enough to be drafted by a very good team who was on the rise. If the Bears draft Deshaun Watson that will not be the case. Watson played for a true powerhouse team at Clemson but he will not be playing for a powerhouse team in Chicago. He could go elsewhere and do quite well but that still doesn't mean he would have played as well or as effectively if he plays for the Bears.
I realize many fans won't get that because they never did with Cutler either but it is what it is. This team is not fully ready to groom a top draft pick QB yet. IMHO that won't happen until after coaching changes are made and then it's possible Watson won't be ideal for that HC and OC, or Trubisky or Kizer take your pick. All we needed for now is a place holder for a year to three years and we have him.
I don't have a problem drafting a QB now and I think we should keep drafting them until we end up like NE with more potential starters than we can possibly use. But we aren't as prepared as many team are for that young QB right now so back down and make a value pick for now. Kick the can down the road 'til we get a team and offensive coaching that gives that guy a chance to be good and win games.
Don't do it and we're right back where we were when we traded for Cutler and Orton was our place holder type guy. I'm looking for change here and this is one area where I need to see it to believe it. Drafting a top QB under pressure when many feel this crop isn't the best and then expecting great coaching to compensate for that will only prove to me they continue to make bad decisions and prolong their stay at the bottom.
